During historical breakdowns, even familiar things unveil new meanings. The media broadcast images of the catastrophe, glances and fingertips are pushed to flat screens here and there. Today we realize some of the features of painting with the joy of a new discovery: its singularity, uniqueness, a special warmth of the material. Canvas and oil preserve every touch of a living artist for us. The "traditional" medium demanded by the market turns out to be one of the most humane.
The artist brothers Anton and Alexey Yakovlevs explore this humane dimension of art and invite us to join them. The key genre of their work is portraiture, which studies the whole figure, usually, of a seated person (caught by the space, or maybe squeezed with it).
Even when a person is absent, space and objects seem to be waiting for it - whether it be a vacant chair in the interior or a flower vase as seen by the room's inhabitant. Our era of metamodern is a new round of popularity of figurative art. The style itself plays the key role: the modernist "irregularity", the artistic freedom from academic restraints is not new, but it's a way of expressing today's vulnerability of the human being. This is the "irregularity" with which our bodies and faces are asymmetrical. The break of standard that makes each of us unique.
